It's been a long time coming, but due to a lot of hurdles, we decided to hold off publishing the entry forms to ensure all details were correct. We lost Birrarung Marr and Alexandra Gardens earlier in the year due to the council introducing a new rule of no car shows on grass areas within the City of Melbourne council area to try and rejuvenate the parks and to save the lawns. This worked in our favour as they faught hard for us to get the Docklands instead, which is a difficult to acquire space with many parties involved in managing it. Recently we then lost a battle with Holden Proving Ground to use the venue we have become used to for Melbourne conventions. This gave us a new lease on life and had us work for something exciting and different. We have now secured the famous Calder Park Thunderdome instead - the only Australian Nascar oval and the first built outside of the USA. This venue will serve as a brilliant location to hold our track day and allows us to do something exciting and different to our usual events in the past. We are exciting for what the 2011 National Corvette Convention will bring Corvette enthusiasts across Australia and have officially released the entry form and event brochure. Be sure to keep out for this with your local club newsletter or feel free to download from this site. 1st May 2010 - Convention news released!
For those who are not aware, each year in Australia, a National Corvette Convention is held every Easter and it changes state each year. Easter just past saw the 22nd National Corvette Convention held in Perth with great success and next year it comes to Melbourne!
12 months ago work began on organising the 2011 convention for Melbourne - 2 years before the event was due to happen and now we are just 1 year or 12 months away from what is going to be another great event - the 23rd National Corvette Convention.
Last year we formed a convention steering committee made up of the heads of the three Victorian Corvette groups - Allan Marshall from the Chevrolet Car Club Vic Vettes subgroup, Denis Canjuga from Corvettes of Geelong and myself Darren Pelacchi from Corvettes of Melbourne. We also roped in a few special contributors to assist from the last Melbourne convention in 2004 who will be key to helping ensure the successful planning of the event. This included Damien Binding, Greg Webster, Roger Broughton and Peter Hickman who all bring their special knowledge and skills to the table. We also needed someone special to help manage the finance and for this Anna Iacovitti stepped up to the plate to help out.
Much key groundwork has been accomplished in the past 12 months, but much more is yet to come and to be done. We will put out this special update each month in the newsletter as well as on our websites to keep you updated with what is occurring as we draw closer to this special Corvette event. So far we have locked in the hotel, are finalising our details on the Show n Shine venue and our track venue and hope to have a special update next month on all of these. We will also be then asking for your help! We had planned to release the entry form in Perth at Easter just past, however we unfortunately lost our show n shine venue due to a new rule introduced by the City of Melbourne council regarding vehicles on public lawns to help preserve our parks and hence are negotiating a new venue and the price. Once this is confirmed we will release the entry form, but until this is complete, we do not know the final entry price.
The good news is that 2011 will be something different and special!
Why, you might ask? In 2011 we will see a 5 day Easter weekend with it joining on to Anzac Day and for this you will have an optional 5th convention day with something special and extra or you can choose to extend your visit or holiday in Victoria or take your time on your trip back home if coming from interstate. Because of this we are planning for and expect a big event and are throwing in lots of extra goodies. Keep your eye out for this update for all the extra goss! So what secret will I release now - the name.... The 2011, the 23rd National Corvette Convention, will be called...
"Corvettes Rev'n Easter 2011"
Events will span from Friday 22nd April to Tuesday 26th April 2011 to give you the biggest ever Corvette Convention Fix! So check out the Corvettes of Melbourne website for the convention logo, and all the info as it comes to hand and definitely don't miss reading this update each month!
